Obesity and type 2 diabetes are among the main health challenges of our time. In Italy alone, millions of people live with these conditions, often associated with cardiovascular, metabolic, and kidney complications that significantly affect quality of life.
To address this health emergency, IRCCS MultiMedica has launched the research project "Neuromodulation Methodologies to Treat Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes," coordinated by Prof. Livio Luzi, Director of the Department of Endocrinology, Nutrition and Metabolic Diseases at IRCCS MultiMedica.
The goal is to develop and validate new therapeutic strategies based on neuromodulation for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes, paving the way for innovative, safe, and personalized solutions.
IRCCS MultiMedica is committed to advancing the prevention and treatment of obesity and metabolic diseases through specialist expertise, clinical research, and an integrated, patient-centred approach to care.
The project was developed within a highly specialized clinical and scientific setting: the Department of Endocrinology, Nutrition, and Metabolic Diseases at IRCCS MultiMedica, which is dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and research of major endocrine and metabolic disorders.
The Department manages type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes through personalized care pathways that integrate medical, nursing, and nutritional expertise.
Clinical activities include the management of innovative therapies for type 2 diabetes, monitoring of type 1 diabetes using the latest technologies, management of dyslipidemias, and the care of major complications in collaboration with specialists from various fields, including nephrology, cardiology, ophthalmology, and diabetic foot care.
IRCCS MultiMedica is also a center for clinical studies on the latest therapies and innovations for metabolic diseases, with the goal of translating scientific research results into everyday clinical practice.
Obesity is now recognized as a complex chronic disease and one of the major challenges for healthcare systems worldwide.
In Italy, it is estimated that:
over 18 million adults are overweight;
about 5 million people are living with obesity;
1 in 10 Italians is affected by obesity.
Beyond its impact on quality of life, obesity significantly increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, kidney failure, certain cancers, and numerous other chronic conditions.
For this reason, research is called upon to develop new therapeutic strategies that are effective, safe, and sustainable, capable of targeting the biological mechanisms underlying the disease.
Obesity is a complex condition involving multiple aspects of health, from metabolism to cardiovascular function, from the respiratory system to psychological well-being.
MultiMedica addresses obesity through a structured and multidisciplinary program, starting with a complete diagnostic evaluation of the individual and leading to the definition of a personalized therapeutic plan, whether medical or surgical, with continuous follow-up over time.
The Obesity Care and Treatment Center at IRCCS MultiMedica in Sesto San Giovanni is accredited by SIO (Italian Society of Obesity) and SICOB (Italian Society for Obesity Surgery) for bariatric surgery.
The program includes the most modern therapeutic options available, including new anti-obesity drugs, major bariatric surgery techniques, the endogastric balloon, and lifestyle modification programs such as BOOST (Body Optimization and Obesity Support Team), an innovative model that integrates advanced tools, including artificial intelligence, to optimize therapeutic physical exercise.
